On Friday, July 31st, at the Money Museum, Ms Ingrida Šimonytė delivered a lecture for members of the organization Adalbertus Werk. She gave an overview of the first half-year in Lithuania with the Euro. The group of over 30 people consisted of Germans, Poles and Lithuanians.
So this lecture was extraordinary in that it was a trilingual: I. Šimonytė spoke in Lithuanian, a translator translated into German, from German — into Polish.
At first the Deputy Governor explained why Lithuania hurried to become a member of the euro area, how our situation was different from, e.g., Poland's, Sweden's or Great Britain's, with their free-floating exchange rate currencies. The change in the public opinion on the euro was also dealt with, interesting statistics on the amounts being exchanged was provided, the short-term and long-term benefits of the euro and the functions of the Bank of Lithuania upon introduction of the euro were presented.
After the lecture, a trilingual tour of the Money Museum was also organised.
Adalbertus Werk is Germany's youth organization, which takes an interest in the links between western and eastern Europe, European Union's development into the East; these activities involve cooperation of the representatives of three countries — Germany, Poland and Lithuania. The youth of the city of Klaipėda has already been participating in the project for 12 years. A general meeting is organized on an annual basis. The project takes place for one week, the subjects of interest are multiple — history, economy, culture.
